Bitcoin Pizza Day – The $69 Million Pizza

The Famous Pizza Story

In May 2010, Bitcoin was still brand new and almost worthless. A Florida programmer named Laszlo Hanyecz wanted to test if Bitcoin could actually be used to buy something in the real world.

He posted on the Bitcoin forum offering 10,000 BTC to anyone who would order him two pizzas. A British man named Jeremy Sturdivant accepted the offer, ordered two Papa John’s pizzas, and had them delivered to Laszlo.

“I just want to report that I successfully traded 10,000 bitcoins for two pizzas.” — Laszlo Hanyecz, May 22, 2010

This event is now celebrated every year on **May 22nd** as Bitcoin Pizza Day. It marks the first time Bitcoin was used as a medium of exchange for a physical product.
